Lewisham Small Sites

  • client: London Borough of Lewisham
  • size: 22 homes
  • status: Ongoing

Following the viability analysis of a wider portfolio of infill sites across the borough of Lewisham undertaken by Stephen Taylor Architects, three sites were identified for the delivery of new homes. Our approach to Elderton Road, Walsham Road and Waldenshaw Road was to maximise density without compromising the quality of the public realm or relationships to their surrounding context, providing efficient, exemplary residential accommodation. In total 22 new affordable homes will be provided across the three sites, in addition to new bio-diverse landscaping and resilient green and blue infrastructure.

High-quality architecture made of robust, durable materials that weather well and age gracefully over time employ a simple set of components in an effective site responsive manner. A limited palette of brick and pigmented pre-cast concrete elements give a calm simplicity to the projects, helping to establish a familiar yet contemporary appearance that adds to the character of the individual streets. Whilst a single design team brought an economy of means across a number of sites, each proposal is the result of a careful study of the surrounding context and engagement with their local stakeholders.

Elderton Road and Walsham Road received planning approval in the summer of 2022 and are currently under construction. Waldenshaw Road received planning approval in June 2023.
